Data analysis methods for the cosmic microwave background

    Get PDF
41 pages, 21 figuresInternational audienceIn this review, we give an overview of some of the major aspects of data reduction and analysis for the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Since its prediction and discovery in the last century, the CMB radiation has proven itself to be one of our most valuable tools for precision cosmology. Recently, and especially when combined with complementary cosmological data, measurements of the CMB anisotropies have provided us with a wealth of quantitive information about the birth, evolution and structure of our Universe. We begin with a simple, general introduction to the physics of the CMB, including a basic overview of the experiments which record CMB data. The focus, however, will be the data analysis treatment of CMB data sets

Coil-helix transition of polypeptide at water-lipid interface

    Get PDF
We present the exact solution of a microscopic statistical mechanical model for the transformation of a long polypeptide between an unstructured coil conformation and an ╬▒\alpha-helix conformation. The polypeptide is assumed to be adsorbed to the interface between a polar and a non-polar environment such as realized by water and the lipid bilayer of a membrane. The interfacial coil-helix transformation is the first stage in the folding process of helical membrane proteins. Depending on the values of model parameters, the conformation changes as a crossover, a discontinuous transition, or a continuous transition with helicity in the role of order parameter. Our model is constructed as a system of statistically interacting quasiparticles that are activated from the helix pseudo-vacuum. The particles represent links between adjacent residues in coil conformation that form a self-avoiding random walk in two dimensions. Explicit results are presented for helicity, entropy, heat capacity, and the average numbers and sizes of both coil and helix segments.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication by JSTA

Pelagic fisheries of India - Winter School on Impact of Climate Change on Indian Marine Fisheries held at CMFRI, Cochin 18.1.2008 to 7.2.2008

The pelagic fishes live most part of their life in the surface or subsurface waters. This group exhibits rich species diversity and abundance in the Indian EEZ. Though 240 species constitute the pelagic fisheries along the Indian coast, it is only about 60 species belonging to 8 groups support major fisheries (Table1). During the last decade, pelagic finfishes contributed to 46-56% (average: 51%) of the total marine fish production, of which almost 70% was fished from within the 50 m depth zon

Scombroid Fishery of the Indian Ocean - An Overview

    Get PDF
In the Indian Ocean, scombroids comprising of tunas, billfishes, seerfishes and mackerels are an invaluable resource and their producer value is estimated to between 2 and 3 billion US dollars annually, besides the vast socio-economic benefits to the fishing nations. Of the three major groups of species, tunas account for the largest share of the total catch and also for the largest increase during the past 10 years. Seerfish catches attained record levels in 1998 while billfish catches have more than doubled since 1992 although the relative contribution of the group is still small. With the introduction of technologically advanced fishing fleets and techniques in the Indian Ocean, the intensity of exploitation of scombroids, especially tunas and billfishes have reached a new peak. An overview of the present status of scombroid fishery of the Indian Ocean is presented below

Insights on diet dynamics of Indian mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier, 1816)

    Get PDF
The diet of Indian mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier, 1816) is reported based on the gut content analysis of specimens collected along the central Kerala coast, India. The study indicated ontogenetic variations in diet with diet breadth being highest in the largest size class of >231 mm total length (TL). Copepods followed by diatoms were the preferred food items. Detritus was an important diet component, especially during the pre-monsoon season and in the larger (>231 mm TL) size groups. The Preponderal Index (Ip) indicated seasonal differences in proportions of the various prey consumed. Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient indicated similar diet quality during monsoon (June-September) and post-monsoon (October-January) seasons; but significant differences as compared to pre-monsoon season (February-May). Based on the results of the study, Indian mackerel was classified as an opportunistic feeder with a diet component that broadly reflects its seasonal-spatial habitats and local food availabilit

TALENT ACQUISITION AS A STRATEGIC TOOL OF BUSINESS PERFORMANCE

    Get PDF
The business performance has been closely tied with the talent management strategies in the hyper-competitive and increasingly complex global economy in order to attain growth and sustain. The company which excelled in talent acquisition experienced which leads to leap up the business performance. Regardless of the size and nature of the business, all the organizations face war for talent. Hence, acquisition of right talent and making a talent pool can be the biggest challenge. This study moves forward theory of talent acquisition strategies (TAS) through the practical implication of private sector organizations in Sri Lanka. The talent acquisition strategies comprise with talent mapping (TM), talent identification (TI), talent onboarding (TO). The foremost intention of this study is to scrutinize the effect of talent acquisition strategies on business performance. The questionnaire survey was conducted for 195 HR professionals in the public sector organizations in Sri Lanka.  In order to analyze data, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was employed to test for its normality, and person correlation test was used for measuring the relationship between variables and multiple regression analysis was applied for determining the effect of variables. The results indicate that even though talent acquisition strategies are significant predictors of business performance public sector, contribution of talent acquisition to the business performance is minimal. Internal alignment between talent management strategies and Business Strategy are suggested for future research as crucial to trump organizational performance

Field identification of scombroids from Indian seas

    Get PDF
Scombroids are a diverse group of pelagic fishes ranging in size from about 30 cm to over 3 m in length. Most of them, especially the tunas and billfishes perform considerable and sometimes even transoceanic migrations. Being highly valued table fishes, they are of significant importance both as a commercial and recreational fisher
